The Role of Leader-Follower Relationships in Leader Communication: A Test Using the LMX and Motivating Language Models

This paper provides evidence on the necessity of congruency between leader behavior and communications in order to maximize worker outcomes. The study uses structural equation model comparisons to test competing models of leader communication and behavior. Results show that the best model is one where leader behavior (as encapsulated through the LMX model) fully mediates the relationship between leader communication (as measured using the motivating language framework) and worker performance and job satisfaction.Downloads
